After a day of bomb scares at Heathrow airport, sniffer dogs on my plane and all sorts of scary things going on in this world that simply should not be happening, I am finally here. Walking around tonight in Phnom Penh, the different smells, the bustle, the scooters, I feel my spirit has found a home. It’s been a while since I was in this part of the world. I’ve missed it. Mod Culture everywhere with scooters galore – I will have to get myself a bike helmet from here for my next ride out back in London. I had a fresh vegetable thai green curry that tasted so incredible, I don’t think I will bother buying one in the UK ever again. The children working so hard on the streets just to sell a can of coke. So much poverty. I saw a lady having a shower by her market stand using a bucket just standing there by the street. She clearly sleeps there at night time with the others. Why not? It’s warm enough, all their things are there… but it’s no home. I saw rats running all around the place. Rubbish on the ground and in some places, massive pieces of broken glass, just in heaps on the pavements. I asked a man if I could photograph his food stand. It had snails and eggs on it. He asked for $1 I said that’s fine. Then he got the giggles, and so did the two ladies with him. They couldn’t stop laughing. I realised he was joking with them saying that he couldn’t sell his food but he could charge for pictures of his food. The laughter was contagious and we all laughed.
I’m tired now, tomorrow is another day, and there is much work to be done. While I jump into my comfortable bed and can hear a sound that reminds me of a weird dodo type thing in Alice in Wonderland – although I think this one is a frog…! my mind wonders to all those people right now on the street where I was just before.
First shop I saw was for music and sound tech… of course! #MusicMakesTheWorldGoAround
Flowers everywhere being thrown away at the end of the day…
Mod Culture here in Cambodia… #ScooterHeaven
She had a long day…
